A Sanctuary for Wings and Wonder.

If you’re into birdwatching, Moolmanshoek is a real treat. With over 250 bird species calling it home, it’s a paradise for anyone who loves spotting feathered friends. Pack your binoculars and keep an eye out for everything from rare raptors to colorful sunbirds and shy forest dwellers—you’ll find plenty of great lookout spots and hides along the way.

The Eastern Free State is one of South Africa’s best-kept birding secrets. Here, grasslands, wetlands, and mountain habitats all meet, creating an incredible variety of birds to discover. With its big open skies, sandstone cliffs, and high-altitude plains, it’s the perfect place for both new birders and seasoned pros to explore.

Unique Landscape, Unique Species.

From the foothills of the Maloti Mountains to the golden plains around Clarens, Fouriesburg, and Ficksburg, birders are in for a treat—there’s a surprising variety of species you can spot in just one outing.

Keep an eye out for some truly special sightings, like: Bearded Vulture (Lammergeier) – rare and regal, often seen gliding over the high escarpments. Bald Ibis – a local special, usually found in flocks perched along cliff edges. Secretary Bird – resembling a mix of an eagle and a crane—it is famous for hunting snakes and other prey by stomping them with powerful, rapid kicks. African Harrier-Hawk & Jackal Buzzard – frequently spotted soaring above rocky outcrops. Cape Rock Thrush & Ground Woodpecker – hiding among sandstone cliffs and the highveld grasslands. It’s the kind of place where even a casual walk can turn into an unforgettable birding experience.

Wild Coast Ride

Thank you so, so much to you and Wiesman for giving me the opportunity to come on your Wild Coast Ride. I think my family, friends and pretty much anyone I meet is tired of hearing how beautiful the ride was and how incredible the horses were =D

It was the most exhilarating, fun and challenging riding I have done and I can’t wait to have our guests experience it too! Wiesman’s guiding is the perfect balance of pushing you out of your comfort zone while making you feel so safe in challenging conditions and I really felt my confidence grow throughout the week. Hearing how much all the other riders loved their time at Moolmanshoek in Lesotho and on the Wild Coast was also incredibly special and testament to the amazing experience you offer guests. The scenery and variety was incredible. Each corner we turned or hill we crested opened onto an even more breathtaking view. I know how beautiful South Africa is but this trip really brought home just how beautiful and diverse it is.

It was so lovely to meet you and Mafie in person finally as well as the rest of the team. Everything felt like it went perfectly smoothly despite the challenges that Colin and Tillaney faced with the trailer and the roads (they are amazing!). Adriaan and Owen were wonderful to have on the ride being so knowledgeable and ready to help with anything.

It was so lovely to see how well cared for the horses were each day and I still can’t get over how fit and surefooted they were. They are truly athletes at the top of their field and I felt so safe on Leier. He is a very special horse. I had my first ride since being back home on Saturday and it felt so strange being back in an English saddle. We went on a beach ride to try and stop the Wild Coast withdrawal symptoms.

Best Birthday Weekend

We felt special since the moment we arrived. The host greeted us at the car as we parked. It was my mom’s birthday weekend and Mafie and her team went out of their way to make it really special. The weekend was in the heart of winter, but we had a fireplace in the room which they lit for us. With underfloor heating and an electric blanket we did not sleep cold at all. Breakfast and dinner was well prepared and presented, and delicious as well. Just loved the breakfast choices!

We went for short walks, as well as a ride on the horse cart. We are not riders, but the horses are absolutely stunning. It is the perfect setting for just about anything. Absolutely recommend Moolmanshoek, you won’t be disappointed. And the whole team can take credit for making this such an unforgettable experience.

Tranquil Beauty

The surrounding country is absolutely beautiful. It invites horse riding, hiking and mountain biking. Lindy was a really gracious hostess and showed us around the lodge. The food cooked by Herman was out of this world and the gluten free option was delicious.
